⏱️ Tick Tock… Before They’re Gone

With a US TikTok ban on the table, the time is NOW to catch up on doc TikToks before they’re gone. We’ve curated a couple of our favorites — is there a better way to start your weekend?

@medical_edm

It really did look like this for me during my first week on surgery😅 #medstudent #medschool #premed #prehealth #doctor #surgery #healthcare #medicine

@mamadoctorjones

They are kinda super human, now that I think about it.

Next week we’ll be back with “Guess What I Saw Today.” Have a riveting tale of your own? Send us your best story from the OR, ED, or clinic (anonymized, obviously).

Helpful Tip Part 2 — Mastering the Art of Delegation as a Multidisciplinary Team Member

Time management is a challenge throughout your medical career — but it can be especially tough when you’re just getting started.

For part 2 of our delegation tip series, we’ll focus on outsourcing and delegating tasks on a team level.

This week’s tips are:

  • Optimization: Dr. Will O’Connor (MD) shares how interprofessional collaboration in healthcare can serve as an excellent clinical optimization strategy. For example using “patient-centric” rounds that involve the primary care physician, bedside nurse, and specialized practitioners can help with communication regarding patient care.

  • Divide and conquer: Task sorting methods can help divide tasks among team members, ensuring that the tasks are best aligned with each team member's strengths. Two great examples of these methods include the ABCDE Method (where you prioritize tasks based on consequences) and the MoSCoW Method (where you sort tasks into categories — see image below).

In a world where time management is the ultimate skill, delegate like a time-saving hero. Soon you'll be known for healing ailments, not wrestling with admin chaos!

If you have any helpful tips for your newer to practice colleagues (or folks just looking to keep improving), let us know here and we might publish your tip!

Postcall’s Guide To Getting What You Want

If you’re starting a new role, you might be wondering how to broach the topic of benefits, compensation, and other details of your offer. Postcall’s got you covered — with tips on how to get what you deserve.

The most important step — speak with a lawyer, ideally one familiar with physician contracts. It’s your job to make sure you understand every detail of your contract. Hospital recruiters will say it’s a standard contract, but standard can often mean one-sided. 🤫

  • Tail Coverage: If you’re getting term-based malpractice insurance, someone will have to cover the tail. And if it’s not covered by the practice, it will often fall on the doctor. Without tail coverage, you won’t be covered for lawsuits filed after your malpractice policy ends.

  • Non-compete clause: Many offers include a non-compete that covers a time and/or geographic range. It’s important to understand the implications of your non-compete, since it may affect your ability to find similar work in the area if you move on from your role. But some states (including CA, NH, and MN) have outlawed non-compete clauses.

  • RVUs and Salary Guarantee: Make sure to get in writing the RVU/year threshold to earn that salary. But also make sure there’s an off-ramp to move to productivity-based compensation once you’re ready. You don’t want to be locked into the guaranteed (minimum) salary if you’re working more shifts, and generating more RVUs.

  • Know your worth: Put those studying skills to the test to figure out how much you should be getting paid based on your experience and specialty. Doing a bit of research to figure out how much your specialty gets paid in your state can help when you begin the negotiation process.

  • Don’t be afraid to branch out: If you’re looking for work, try targeting more than one hospital or clinic to improve your chances of getting what you want. Even if you only have 2-3 offers, you can use them as leverage to secure the best offer at your top choice. Confidence is key!
